Administrative history
If Protestantism had spread on the island of Madeira in the 1940s and if, on the mainland, Gomez y Togar founded, in 1839, the "Chapel of the Promulgation of the Holy Gospel of Jesus" (Lisbon), the episcopal tendency of this nucleus would be resumed, from 1867, by Angel Herreros de Mora.
This ecclesiastical was elected the first bishop of a reformed Church in Portugal (1874). As a result of the decisions taken by the Catholic Church, at Vatican Council I, a dozen priests left this corporation, in protest against the new dogmas, and joined the Angel Mora congregation. Several of these ex-priests married in the Reformed Evangelical Church and also became the main pastors of the evangelical groups. However, some were forced to find ways to support themselves in secular activities. In 1870, in the temple of Mora, the abjuration of Father João Joaquim da Costa e Almeida also took place. Fathers José Inácio Pinheiro and
Manuel Jerónimo Cordeiro, after passing through the Spanish Evangelical Church, returned to Catholicism. For his part, José Joaquim Rechoso entered the community of Mora, but ended up following the law practice in Portalegre, while José Nunes Chaves, after joining the presbyterian congregation of S. Paulo (Lisbon), would be one of the founders of the Lusitana Church. In view of the rigidity of the law, some apostate priests acquired Spanish nationality (eg António Ribeiro de Melo).
Archival history
