Fernando da Luz Soares foi baptizado e confirmado na paróquia de S. João Evangelista em 1957.
Em 1971 é ordenado diácono pelo Bispo D. Luís Pereira. No ano seguinte, no Salvador do Mundo (Prado-Vila Nova de Gaia), é ordenado presbítero e é designado pároco da mesma congregação, funções que exercerá até 1987. Eleito bispo pelo Sínodo em 16 de Junho de 1979, a sua sagração ocorre a 1 de Maio do ano seguinte.
Foi bispo até o ano 2003 e atualmente é Bispo Emérito da Igreja Lusitana.
