History

Nasceu a 28 de julho de 1849, foi industrial e nessa qualidade teve de solicitar uma autorização especial para poder ser ministro da Igreja Lusitana, à qual aderiu em 1890 e que serviu durante 41 anos.
Pela proximidade que manteve com o irmão, cinco anos mais velho, Diogo Cassels, foi dos membros mais ativos da Igreja. Em 1886 era o tesoureiro da Junta Paroquial do Redentor e já então, sustentava a escola do Candal, inaugurada em Fevereiro de 1884. Em 1900 dirigia a orquestra da União Cristã Feminina do Bom Pastor.
Além da actividade musical, André dedicou-se ainda à ficção, escrevendo novelas de edificação religiosa.
Residiu sempre em Gaia, primeiro em Lavadores e depois no Candal, onde fundou uma escola a que mais tarde juntou um templo. A ele se deve também o edifício da Igreja Lusitana do Bom Pastor, Candal, Vila Nova de Gaia, que mandou construir em 1886. Como seu pai, John Cassels, que tinha montado uma fábrica de fiação em Mafamude, próximo do cemitério, o Reverendo André Cassels instala no Candal uma fábrica de fiação, conhecida então como "fábrica da lã". Mas não se limitou a ser apenas industrial, dedicou-se ainda à pregação do Evangelho nas Missões de Coimbrões,Madalena, do Marco e de Lavadores, Vila Nova de Gaia, Guimarães, e Viana do Castelo.
Gostava também de escrever, no seu jornal "O Bom Pastor" há vários trabalhos seus de muito interesse; a ele se deve também a publicação da "Biblioteca António Maria Candal", trÊs séries, com 20 opúsculos, ainda o Almanach para 1909, repositório de boas informações para aquele ano e também de história. É certo que era o Reverendo Armando Pereira de Araújo quem dirigia as publicações, mas André Cassels sem pre as acompanhava. Entre 1909 e 1914 escreveu 68 artigos e tantas outras notas.
Foi ordenado diácono em 1891, em Dublin, e a 13 de Junho de 1895 ordenado presbítero.
Criou a Liga dos Rebuscadores e participou em missões fora de Vila Nova de Gaia. Contribuiu ainda, para publicações periódicas como "O Bom Pastor" (1901-1916), "Luz e Verdade" (1919). Faleceu em 18 de dezembro de 1931, contando 82 anos.
Born on July 28, 1849, he was an industrialist and in that capacity he had to apply for a special authorization in order to be a minister of the Lusitanian Church, which he joined in 1890 and served for 41 years.
Due to the closeness, he maintained with his brother, five years older, Diogo Cassels, he was one of the most active members of the Church. In 1886 he was the treasurer of the Parish Council of the Redeemer and already supported the school of Candal, which opened in February 1884. In 1900 he conducted the orchestra of the "União Cristã Feminina do Bom Pastor". In addition to musical activity, André also dedicated himself to fiction, writing novels of religious edification.
He always lived in Gaia, first in Lavadores and then in Candal, where he founded a school to which he later joined a temple. He also owes the building of the Lusitanian Church of Bom Pastor, Candal, Vila Nova de Gaia, which he had built-in 1886. Like his father, John Cassels, who had set up a spinning mill in Mafamude, near the cemetery, the Reverend André Cassels installs a yarn factory in Candal, known then as "wool factory". But he was not limited to being just an industrialist, he also dedicated himself to preaching the Gospel in the Missions of Coimbrões, Madalena, Marco and Lavadores, Vila Nova de Gaia, Guimarães, and Viana do Castelo.
He also liked to write, in his newspaper "O Bom Pastor" there are several works of his of great interest; it is also due to the publication of the "Library António Maria Candal", three series, with 20 booklets, still the Almanach for 1909, the repository of good information for that year and also of history. It is true that it was Reverend Armando Pereira de Araújo who directed the publications, but André Cassels always accompanied them. Between 1909 and 1914 he wrote 68 articles and many other notes.
He has ordained a deacon in 1891, in Dublin, and on June 13, 1895, he has ordained an elder.
