Nasceu em Vila Franca de Xira em 1908. Em 1932 após estudos em Lisboa, licenciou-se em Medicina. Depois dum curso brilhante, formou-se em medicina pela Universidade de Lisboa em 1932. Oriundo duma família de médicos, exerceu medicina na terra da sua natalidade até à data em que foi sagrado bispo. No ano de 1948 ingressa na Igreja Lusitana como pregador licenciado, é instituído diácono na Catedral de S. Paulo, pelo Arcebispo de Armagh em 1949 e a 8 de Outubro de 1950 é ordenado presbítero. Foi Bispo da Igreja Lusitana entre 1962 e 1981.
