José Nunes Chaves (1828-1893) era um ex-padre católico que abjurara em 1876 e ex-capelão da igreja da colónia italiana do Loreto. Nesse mesmo ano funda a Missão Episcopal, na Rua de S. Marçal, em Lisboa. Foi também o fundador em 1877 da Igreja de Jesus, em Lisboa.
Em 1889 deixa a Igreja Lusitana e ingressa na Presbiteriana. Joaquim dos Santos Figueiredo, ex-sacerdote católico, tornou-se pastor da igreja presbiteriana de Lisboa, substituindo o Rev. José Nunes Chaves.
