Cândido Joaquim de Sousa nasceu no Porto, em Março de 1855. Conheceu o Evangelho na Igreja Metodista e foi professor numa das escolas desta comunhão. Em 1877 veio do Porto para Lisboa e, ao mesmo tempo que exercia o lugar de professor do Colégio Evangélico Lusitano, recebia lições de teologia do reverendo Thomas Godfrey Pope.
Foi ordenado em 1880, sendo colocado na Igreja Lusitana de S. Paulo com oseu presbítero. Mais tarde foi nomeado ministro da igreja de S. Pedro, no Largo das Taipas. Quando faleceu o cónego Pope em 1902, o Sínodo Diocesano elegeu-o seu Presidente. Dirigiu o jornal "O Evangelista", órgão da Igreja Lusitana. Faleceu em 1905.
